The Voice of Singapore Mandarin: Insights from a Spoken Language Database
Singapore Mandarin is deeply influenced by Singapore’s multicultural and multilingual environment, making it distinct from Mandarin spoken in other regions. But what makes Singapore Mandarin unique? How did these features come about, and how are they changing over time? To answer these questions, we have built the largest spoken Mandarin database in Singapore, and uncovered some changes influenced by English including new sentence structures and expressions. These findings shed light on how Singapore Mandarin continues to grow and transform in a dynamic linguistic landscape. This talk will highlight these linguistic insights and discover what makes Singapore Mandarin one of a kind.
